Notes of an American Soccer Spectator

It’s been a week full of soccer.  Each morning I’ve been helping with our club’s soccer camp, working with the U9 “boys” team (which includes two young ladies who could be the stars of the side).  And with the head coach of our U10 boys team away on vacation I’ve been running our evening practices in preparation for two friendlies we’ll play next week.  But I still found some time to take in an exciting Chelsea - Reading match yesterday afternoon.  Reading were hard done by, I thought.

I appreciate the suggestions about which EPL team to follow this season.  I’d considered Newcastle as a possibility.  Years ago, when I was a beginning beer drinker, I developed a taste for Newcastle.  A few of the pubs I frequented had Newcastle on tap as their “alternative” beer.  I haven’t had a Newcastle in (probably) ten, maybe fifteen, years.  Not that I’d have to start drinking Newcastle again if I started watching Newcastle United.

Swansea City attracted me last year when I caught a few of their matches.  I liked their style of play.  That and the fact they are a Welsh club…  I spent a few days in Wales last year and I think I caught some sort of Welsh bug since I suddenly had the urge to start keeping up with Cardiff City (mainly by reading the coverage in The Guardian).
